For the first time, India operates a port outside its territory

India will be operating a part of the Shahid Beheshti Port, Chabahar in Iran from now onwards. The terminal area, office building and cargo handling equipment were handed over to India Ports Global Chabahar Free Zone last Month itself.

Cyprus registered bulk carrier Macheras was the first to arrive at the port after the takeover. It had 72458 tonnes of corn cargo and landed on the port on December 30, 2018.

This is considered to be historic as it is the first time that India is operating a port outside its own territory. It was in 2013 that initial talks discussions over Chabahar port with Ir4an were held. Later in 2016, India and Iran engaged in a ten-year contract to equip and operate the port during Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to Tehran.
