The new Narendra Modi government is considering equipping the fishermen community to take up seafarer jobs. The fisher folk would be given special training so that they could take up seafarer jobs, said Union Minister of State for Shipping (Independent Charge) Manuskh Lal Mandaviya after assuming office.
Despite a large number of fishermen venture into sea, those who are taking up jobs in the shipping industry are far less, he said and hoped that the people from the fishermen community are given the best training so that they could take up any job of a seafarer, he said.
The fishermen could be given ten to 15 days of training and then certificated from the Director General of Shipping could be issued. Stating that there was vast scope in the field of seafarer, Mandaviya said that it has been estimated that about 50 lakh seafarers are now needed across the globe. He said that the government would take all initiative for increasing the number of seafarers from the country. He also mentioned that a small country like Philippines alone had more than 8 lakh seafarers where as India just had about two lakh.
