Maritime 2020 theme focuses on Sustainable shipping

Aimed at raising awareness on the Sustainable Development Goals of United Nations, the International Maritime Organisation has announced that the World Maritime Theme for 2020 will be “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet”.

The theme was endorsed at a meeting of the International Maritime Council. IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim was quoted as saying that the theme would help the member states to achieve SDG.

He pointed out that 2020 would be the beginning of delivery and action. The decade ahead would be decisive for shipping industry. Lim mentioned that world leaders would gather at the United Nations and take stock of the developments in each country with regard to SDG.

The summit would help taking further steps in shipping industry, he added.

The secretary general said that the shipping industry had already taken various steps in realising SDG. As part of this, he said that steps have been taken to bring down emissions and also had taken the initiative in implementing the Ballast Water Management Convention.  The industry has also taken steps in reducing marine litter and protecting the   polar region. As part of fulfilling SDG, Lim said that women are being given more representation in the industry.
