United Nations Shipping Agency has given a clarion call to clear the decks for accommodating more women in Maritime and shipping industry. A male dominated industry, the International Maritime Organisation has given the message on Maritime Day to all stake holders to accommodate more women force in the industry.
In a message, the IMO has said that women would help in empowering the economic growth and add to secure, clean, sustainable and safe shipping.
Noting that a sustainable future can be built once gender equality is recognised, International Maritime Organisation Secretary General Kitack Lim was quoted as saying that gender equality was one among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals envisaged by the United Nations.
He said that the organisations key goal was to help the member countries achieve Sustainable Development Goals, he emphasised that the Organisation would continue to help the member states in all its efforts. Lm said that women of today in maritime industry are much bold and powerful who were constantly challenging age old perceptions. In the changed world scenario, he said that more openings in the maritime industry are now available for women. More and more women have started to take up jobs in the maritime industry, thus proving that it is not a male dominated industry from now on.
