More than 1000 Kilos of plastic bags, plastic pipes and ghost nets were fished out of the lagoons in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep in the last two days as part of a drive on lagoon cleaning. The ‘Lagoon cleaning’ is an initiative of the Environment and Forest department as part of the Wild Life week celebrations in the island.
The Ghost nets and plastics were entangled in the corals, which are facing a threat as part of pollution. Environment and Forest secretary and Chief Wildlife Warden of Lakshadweep Damodhar A T inaugurated the voluntary program on October 6.
As part of the wildlife week, various programmes are being held in the Union territory. At INS Dweepprakshak, Navy officials, Coast guard, Self Help Group volunteers and people from all walks of life planted about 500 saplings. During Vanamohsav, a Padyathra for creating awareness on environment and clean environment was also held. The beaches were also cleaned and also the ponds as part of the drive.
