Green signal for first marina in Mumbai

Mumbai is to get its first marina with the state environment department giving the green signal after it has been denied for several years. The Marina would come up at Belapur in Navi Mumbai.

The Marina would be developed by SHO Marina, a private firm, who have already built a similar one at Kochi a few years ago. The City and Industrial Development Corporation and the Maharashtra Maritime Board would develop the land for the project.

Earlier there was a plan to build marina near the Gate Way of India but was dropped because of the opposition from the Navy.  The project at Belapur is estimated to be completed in two years.

The Marina will have parking facility for vessels and boats, workshops for maintenance of vessels and boats. The authorities are also learned to have planned a garden for the children. Though a floating pontoon has been proposed, the sanction for it is yet to be got.

The clearance has been given with strict riders. The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority has strictly asked the developers to provide toilet facility and maintain proper solid waste collection. Though the Corporation and the Board had demanded allotting hotels and restaurants in the marina, the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority said that no such facility should be provided in the region as it came under Coastal regulation Zone 1
