Kerala has got its first clam processing facility at Perumbalam island in Alappuzha, which is believed to add to the economy of about 250 families living in the island. Moreover, the modern clam processing unit will also help in getting the best hygienic clams for the people.
The processing facility funded by Science for Equity, Empowerment and Development division of the Department of Science and Technology has been established by Central Institute of Fisheries Technology. The processing unit also has the support of Perumbalam Grama Panchayat and Haritha Farmers Club. Kerala Fisheries Minister J Mercukutty Amma inaugurated the processing unit last week.
The processing unit has all modern facilities that gives it an added mark among the clam processing units. It contains depuration tanks system, flake ice machine and chill room. There is a big processing hall, cooking-cum-boiler unit. There is a separate portion for separating the meat from the shell.The processing unit also ensures employment to the women in the Island. About 100 women from Perumbalam panhayat have been given training under the Good Manufacturing Practices project. The Panchayat authorities said that the processing unit was of much help to the women in the region and would help in driving their economic stability.
