A floating jetty has been envisaged for the Mangaluru port and once completed, it will be first of its kind in Karanataka. The new jetty is hopeful of giving added advantage to the fishermen at the port.
The jetty to be constructed will be sixty metres long and six metres wide. The jetty is being built at a cost of about Rs 6.25 crore. The jetty will have a capacity to carry 360 tonnes of load.
The floating jetty is unique in the way that it rises and falls according to the tidal waters. Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath said that the proposal for the floating jetty has been sent to the government and the work would be started once the proposal is agreed.
The sea side of the jetty will have rubber cushions so that the fishing boats do not get damaged when docking at the jetty. The new jetty has been proposed as the Bunder fishing harbour was under much pressure because of the overburdening of fishing vessels. Kamath also said that new technologies should be adopted for building new jetties. He also mentioned that the new floating jetty would be built along Hoige Bazar.
