Centre for converting saline water gold mines

The Centre is for considering promoting shrimp culture in saline water, which is considered a major issue in many states. Union Minister Giriraj Singh said that these saline waters could be converted into gold mines through shrimp culture.

Noting that there was much hope for brackish water fishing, he said that the department was trying everything to tap this potential. Singh also mentioned that training and field experience and sharing of best practices among all fishermen would be envisaged. .

He said that cage culture should be encouraged in places where ocean is unstable. He also claimed that that new technology was available for increasing fish production. He further said that Cage culture was effective for fishing in reservoirs. On the harvesting losses, Singh said that Post harvesting losses were calculated at 30 percent earlier and now it has been reduced to 25 per cent. He noted that the Centre aimed at bringing down the harvesting loss to ten per cent. On fish productivity and marketing, Singh said that only fish breeds that have a good export market value should be cultivated
