With 138 reservoirs, Odisha is all set to review cage culture in a bid to increase fish prodiution in the state. The state hopes to produce about 125,000 tonnes of fish from its eight large reservoirsthat holds 200,000 hectares of water.
As of now, Odisha only produces 50,000 tonnes of carp species that includes rohu and catla and these are imported to other states. Aimed at promoting cage culture, the Odisha government is likely to announce its guidelines on cage culture by March 2020.
There are reports that a high-level delegation led by Agriculture Production Commissioner Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra had recently visited aquaculture operators in Pune. They had visited Vaidika Group in the Kasarsai Dam and the net manufacturer Garware Technical Fibres.
It was in 2015 that Odisha started to promote cage culture. In odisha, about 320 rectangular cages have been installed in 13 reservoirs. All t6he cages produce pangasius that has only limited market potential.
